We always tip, but even customers who don't are treated equally as well. Our other faves were Fermin & Fernando - they work so hard but keep their friendly polite manner no matter what. In the mornings and early afternoon on the beach the wonderful Enrique - what a guy ! He waited on me and the husband hand and foot, throwing in some witty stories at the same time, always jolly but efficient at the same time.

However, the real standouts for us are : Antenor the completely lovely, very professional head waiter in the evenings, you will find him at the theatre bar and stage, also Alexis our very smiley helpful young man. At the hotel you have the most wonderful staff I have ever experienced, I can't thank them enough, every single person. Even though it is a 10 hour flight from the UK we both feel it's worth it, I was completely spoiled too - and it wasn't my birthday. We even had breakfast there a couple of times just to be quiet for a while. We made use of all of the restaurants and found Lounge 24 very useful, what a great idea. It is a beautiful hotel and spotlessly clean - and I am rather fussy. The day was a success from start to finish : it was the Foam Party - brilliant, and later in the evening the Mariachi band, all of it more that I could wish for. After the lovely meal they staff came and sang to him and brought a cake complete with sparkler, this turned into another tear-jerker. We ate in Krystal that evening, and they let us actually book the table. I actually burst into tears when I saw the efforts the housekeeping team had made it was so pretty, even my tough guy was emotional.

On the big day I arranged with reception to put up the decorations I took with me, as a surprise when we returned from the beach. I emailed the hotel a few days before our departure and when I arrived they upgraded the room at no extra cost. From the quick check in ( I used the easy RIU app beforehand ) to leaving for the airport our experience was faultless. I needn't have worried at all - we had an absolutely fantastic holiday. It has been planned for a couple of years now and I was rather nervous, just because I wanted it to be 'nice' for him. We travelled to Mexico for the first time to celebrate my Husband's 60th Birthday.

Our favorites are Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas and Riu Palace Aruba. We didn’t go to the beach or swim in the ocean, so other than the smell, it didn’t bother us. The red tide algae in the ocean was very evident and smelly. The toilet closet was so small that there was very little leg room which made getting off the toilet without banging your head on the wall a bit of a challenge. We didn’t like the sinks and tub integrated into the bedroom. We didn’t care for the remodeled room design. Since we were a group of five, we had to reserve our chairs by the pool before 10am in order to be together and under one of the pergolas. Most days, there were three lunch options by the pool: lunch buffet, outdoor grill, or pop up food tent serving things like tacos, burritos, etc. Less impressive were the Mexican restaurant and steakhouse. We particularly liked the Japanese and Italian restaurants. Generally the food was good and we always had plenty to eat. Evening live music and shows were very good. Service was great and staff was very friendly. The hotel, room and grounds were very clean. The hotel and pools were remodeled since our last visit. This was our first return to Riu Palace Riviera Maya since 2013.
